Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (TSC) launched the 100th TESS-series Handymax bulk carrier, Jawa Power (HN: 1136), for Orchid Seaways Pte. Ltd. of Singapore on June 29, 1999.

TESS stands for Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship, and the series consists of the TESS 40 (40,000DWT), TESS 45 (45,000DWT), and the newly-developed TESS 52 (52,000DWT) types. 98 vessels of TESS 40 and 45 types have already been completed and nine vessels are on order.

The first TESS 40 was completed for Ugland of Norway in 1984, and 40 vessels were built for the TESS 40 series. The first TESS 45 was constructed in 1994. This series was developed based on the TESS-40 type to match requirements in the shipping markets.

Increased DWT of the TESS 45 series is supported with the same capacity of ship speed and fuel consumption as achieved by the TESS-40 series. Mounting of three diesel generators and M0 conformity of the engine room are standard specifications for the series. The TESS design surpassed other similar bulkers with reduced specifications due to the inactive market at that time.

The new TESS 52 series has 18% more cargo space (67,500m3) over the TESS 45 (57,000m3), Five vessels of this type have already been contracted with Asian shipowners at the end of July, and moreover, there are 10 vessels with a letter of intent of construction.

The TESS series also includes the EURO TESS 40, 45, and 52 with European specifications. The company intends to expand the market for the TESS series in the future.

Features of Jawa Power

Water resistance is minimized by the hull design developed by Tsuneishi as a TESS standard.
Main engine is the long-stroke 2-cycle diesel with low fuel consumption, which increases propeller efficiency at reduced rpm.
Total 57,000m3 cargo space is provided by five cargo holds, each with dimensions of 29m long x 30m wide x 15m high.
Large hatch openings and hatch covers that automatically open and close are provided for efficient cargo handling of iron ore, coal, cereals, steel pipes, hot coils, timber, etc.
Four grab buckets and 25t hoisting capacity deck cranes are installed between cargo holds on the deck to facilitate coal unloading at ports in S. E. Asia. Coal is used at thermal power stations in the region.
Bow thruster is provided for easy berthing and unberthing.
